Black History Month 2023
The theme of this year’s UK Black History month is ‘Saluting Our Sisters’. The aim of this theme is to learn about Black and Mixed Heritage British women who have shaped history. At Warren Primary, we learned about their achievements and accomplishments. This year we invited some local influential Black British women from different industries including sports, food, business owners and religion.
Mrs Dee Rosemond-Justin
Ex Prison administrator, co-founder of a charity and talented hair stylist. Dee taught pupils the origins of braiding and the difference between Cornrows and Braids. Braids are a part of other hair cultures like the Vikings, Native Americans, and Chinese. The term cornrows originated somewhere between the 16th and 19 centuries in colonial America and was named after the agricultural fields that many enslaved people worked. In the Caribbean they are sometimes referred to as ‘Canerows’. Whilst talking about it, Dee quickly braided Mrs Fogg’s hair (as it was her birthday) in Assembly!
Mrs Taaya Griffiths
Illustrator, founder of Swanky Portraits Ltd, Graphic designer and PTFA mum. Taaya spoke about her journey working in the graphics and designing industry for more than 10 years. Taaya was honored to be named in 2021 as one of the top 20 female entrepreneurs.
Taaya motivated our pupils and asked “Do you have an idea you are passionate about? Talk it through with a small group of friends who know something about it, including those who don’t like the idea. Listen to them all, and then refine your idea. Start small; when you stumble, pick yourself up, again and again. The best way to remain focused is to continue to celebrate every little milestone.”
Mrs Nilo Qureshi
Business administrator, Islamic speaker, and works for a charity that feeds the homeless.
Year 6 pupils had an in depth lesson about Muslim traditions and how it impacts the community. Mrs Qureshi shared her own family beliefs and traditions based on the teaching from the Holy Quran.
