St. Andrew’s Day – The patron Saint of Scotland

A parent of our school, Mr .Dan Harrison and his wife Nikki visited us to share his Scottish heritage for St. Andrew’s day this year on the 30 November 2023.

He was born in Edinburgh which is 400 miles from London/Essex to Edinburgh to his home city. Mr Harrison wore his Scottish rugby jersey which Scottish Rugby (SRU) made for him especially with his #11 position (left wing) numbers specially printed in a Wallace Tartan. William Wallace fought long and hard to protect Scotland from England invaders. He wore his kilt which is a traditional dress and represents the Wallace Clan of which he is a distant relative.

Pupils and staff were fascinated by his powerpoint which was filled with historical and fun facts about Scotland. There are over 900 islands around Scotland! He spoke about St Andrew depicted as the patron saint – a patron saint is someone (usually religious) who is given responsibility for a nation as guardian and custodian and is a huge honour. This happened in the early 1300’s.

At Rugby games and all traditional events, the piper stands on the roof of the stadium and plays Flower of Scotland ceremoniously on the bagpipes to inspire the team and the crowd. Dan sang one of the verses of Flower of Scotland and whilst he was singing a bagpiper started playing outside the school hall which both surprised and delighted everyone. The bagpiper entered the hall and pupils were impressed by his performance. He played a few more songs which was fascinating and the question and answer session was brilliant as pupils had so many questions which was indicative of the absolutely amazing Assembly.
